Local government elections 2026

Local government election tagline - Make your mark. Vote local.

Telephone voting

If you are interstate or overseas, or have a print disability, you can vote by telephone.

The service is secure and confidential. In a single phone call, you will be marked off the roll and your vote will be recorded on a ballot paper.

See opening hours and instructions below.

Who is eligible to use this service

If you will be interstate or overseas during the polling period, and you're unable to receive and return your postal ballot pack before 2 pm on Tuesday 27 October, you are eligible to use the telephone voting service.

If you have a print disability, you are eligible to use the telephone voting service. The Tasmanian Electoral Commission defines a print disability as:

  1. vision impairment or blindness,
  2. a person unable to hold or manipulate written material or to focus or move their eyes,
  3. physical dexterity problems such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, arthritis or paralysis,
  4. a learning disability, such as dyslexia,
  5. a brain injury or cognitive impairment,
  6. literacy difficulties, or
  7. early dementia.

Service hours

  • Monday 12 October to Friday 23 October, 9 am to 5 pm* weekdays.
  • Eligible voters with a print disability can access the service early, on Thursday 8 or Friday 9 October, 9 am to 5 pm*.
*Tasmanian time (AEDT, UTC+11).

How to vote by telephone

1. Consider your vote

Review the candidates and decide your preferences.

2. Phone the TEC

Call 1800 801 701 during telephone voting hours, and select the first menu option (1). Be ready to make a note of your six-digit phone voting code.

3. Confirm your eligibility

An election official will confirm that you’re eligible to vote by phone, enrolled to vote and haven’t already voted. They will then provide you with a unique phone voting code.

4. Protect the secrecy of your vote

You will be transferred to a separate phone voting team. Two voting assistants will be on the call. They will ask for your unique phone voting code. Do not give them your name.

5. Cast your vote

One voting assistant will ask for your voting preferences and record them on a ballot paper. The second voting assistant will monitor the call and the recording of your preferences. Your completed ballot paper will then be placed in a secure ballot box.

Calling from overseas

  • Call +61 3 6208 8700 during telephone voting hours (AEDT, UTC+11) or call us online (a link will be available here during the telephone voting period).
  • If calling online, allow access to your microphone if your device asks.
  • Make sure your device’s volume is turned up before you start.
  • Your online call will play through your device’s speaker. For privacy, you may prefer to use headphones or make the call somewhere quiet and private.
  • If the online call does not connect, try another device or call +61 3 6208 8700 instead.
