Telephone voting
Telephone voting is a secure and confidential voting option for eligible electors that maintains the secrecy of their vote. The two-step process can be completed in a single phone call and involves registering to receive a unique code, then casting a vote anonymously with the assistance of trained staff over the phone.
Who is eligible
If you will be interstate or overseas during the polling period you are eligible to use the telephone voting service.
If you have a print disability, you are eligible to use the telephone voting service. The Tasmanian Electoral Commission defines a print disability as:
- vision impairment or blindness,
- a person unable to hold or manipulate written material or to focus or move their eyes,
- physical dexterity problems such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, arthritis or paralysis,
- a learning disability, such as dyslexia,
- a brain injury or cognitive impairment,
- literacy difficulties, or
- early dementia.
How to vote
- Consider your vote. Review the candidates for your division and decide your preferences.
- During the phone voting service hours (see below) call the TEC on 1800 801 701 or +61 3 6208 8700 and select the first menu option (1). Get ready to make a note of your unique phone voting code that will have six digits.
- A team member will check if you're enrolled to vote and that you haven't already voted. If you are eligible, they will provide you with a unique phone voting code.
- To maintain the secrecy of your vote, you will then be transferred to a separate phone voting team who will ask for your unique phone voting code, and then number your preferences on a ballot paper before placing it in a secure ballot box.
