Candidates

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission conducts three major elections in which people may nominate: House of Assembly elections, Legislative Council elections, and local government elections.

Each election has its own rules, timelines, and requirements for nominating a candidate. There are also obligations that must be met once someone becomes a candidate.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission’s resources for candidates include information about nominating and campaigning as a candidate, detailed candidate handbooks, and disclosure and funding obligations (for parliamentary candidates only).

Current members of parliament and local government mayors and councillors may also need to refer to this information if they are seeking re-election.

House of Assembly

House of Assembly elections select the 35 members of the lower house of Tasmania’s state parliament. At least once every four years, seven candidates are elected in five Assembly divisions.
