Members of parliament

On this page

A member of parliament is an elected representative who serves in the Parliament of Tasmania. Members make laws, review the work of government and represent the interests of people in their local community.

Tasmania’s parliament has two houses: the House of Assembly (lower house), where members represent multi-member divisions, and the Legislative Council (upper house), where members represent single-member divisions.

Who represents me?

There are eight members of parliament representing the area in which you live – seven in the House of Assembly and one in the Legislative Council.

Search for your local elected representatives using our MyReps tool.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission will also publish a Register of Assembly Members from 1 July 2025. Please note, this is administered solely by the Commission and members do not need to provide their information.

Electing members of parliament

Members of the House of Assembly are elected using the Hare–Clark system of proportional representation. This means seven members are elected in each division, and candidates are elected once they reach a set quota of votes. Voters rank candidates in order of preference, and preferences help decide the outcome if not all seats are filled straight away.

Legislative Council members are elected using full preferential voting in single-member divisions. This means a candidate must receive more than half the formal votes. If no one reaches a majority straight away, preferences are distributed until a winner is decided.

Re-election

Members who intend to recontest their seat in an upcoming election will find information about nomination processes and disclosure and funding obligations for candidates on our candidates page.

Electoral disclosure and funding obligations

All members have obligations under the Electoral Disclosure and Funding Act 2023. Additionally, Legislative Council members have obligations under the Electoral Act 2004. A member must still be aware of their legislative obligations for electoral disclosure and funding, even if they are not recontesting their seat.

These obligations may include:

Eligible House of Assembly members may claim for public funding from the Administration Fund and/or the Election Campaigns Fund.
