Candidate disclosure and expenditure

The Electoral Disclosure and Funding Act 2023 commenced on 1 July 2025, which established a new scheme for disclosing political donations and electoral expenditure in parliamentary elections.

A candidate or intending candidate must register with the Tasmanian Electoral Commission before they can accept political donations or pay for electoral expenditure in relation to a Legislative Council election. This may occur well before a candidate nominates, if they have started campaigning prior to the nomination period for an election.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission has developed a suite of information to help candidates and other electoral participants understand their obligations under electoral legislation, and support their new disclosure and funding requirements.

Campaigning and advertising

For Tasmanian parliamentary elections, campaign material must be authorised between the issue of the writ and the close of poll. Campaign material must not contain an image or name of another candidate without their consent. See the candidate handbook for more details about these and other conditions that apply.

The Electoral Act 2004

The Electoral Act 2004 and other legislation relevant to Tasmanian elections can be found online. Candidates are encouraged to seek their own legal advice regarding the legislative requirements.
