Local government elections 2026
Nominations closed at 12 noon, Monday 21 September 2026.
To complete the nomination process, candidates were required to submit a nomination form and could also submit an optional candidate statement and photograph. Candidates were responsible for ensuring their nomination form and candidate statement, if providing one, were lodged by the close of nominations at the time and date above.
Information about subsequent nominations for King Island and Tasman councils is available.
Members will be elected to serve a four-year term of office.
The candidate handbook provides election information and details on procedures, as well as requirements regarding campaigning and nominating.

Candidates were required to lodge a nomination form signed by the candidate and at least two electors from the relevant local government area.

Candidate statements and photographs give candidates an opportunity to provide information to electors.
They are optional and do not form part of a candidate’s nomination. Candidates were required to submit them by the published deadline.
Candidate statements and photographs that met the published requirements are available on the candidate pages and are included in postal ballot packs.
All candidates must lodge an electoral advertising return within 45 days after the certificate of election is issued. Candidates must declare all electoral advertising in their returns, and include all invoices, accounts and receipts.

It is an offence not to complete and lodge a return with the Electoral Commissioner.

The Local Government Act 1993 and other legislation relevant to Tasmanian elections can be found online. Candidates are encouraged to seek their own legal advice regarding the legislative requirements.
When nominations closed at noon on Monday 21 September 2026, five nominations were received for seven councillor positions on King Island Council, and six nominations for seven councillor positions on Tasman Council.
In accordance with section 274 of the Local Government Act 1993, all nominees were duly elected unopposed and nominations were called for the remaining councillor vacancies — two on King Island Council and one on Tasman Council.
Nominations for all three vacancies closed at 12 noon on Monday 28 September 2026.
