Local government elections 2026

Local government election tagline - Make your mark. Vote local.

Candidate nominations

Nominations are now open.

All candidates are encouraged to submit their nomination as early as possible. Lodging early allows time to resolve any issues before nominations close. Forms can be lodged in person, by email, fax or post before 12 noon on Monday 21 September 2026. See below for full details.

Late nominations cannot be accepted.

Who can nominate?

To nominate as a councillor, you must be enrolled in the local government area and have your principal place of residence in Tasmania.

You can only nominate as a councillor in one local government area.

Anyone who is eligible to nominate as a councillor is also eligible to nominate for the office of mayor or deputy mayor in the same local government area.

How to lodge your nomination

Completed nomination forms must be lodged with the returning officer or appointed electoral officer at the relevant council before the closing time.

The TEC's preferred method for lodging nomination forms is by email: nominations@tec.tas.gov.au

Alternatively, find lodgement locations, postal addresses, fax numbers and other details by selecting your council below.

Positions going to election

Following recent amendments to the Local Government Act 1993, the number of councillors to be elected has changed for 2026. The table below reflects the new arrangements: 9 councillors for Clarence City, Glenorchy City, Hobart City, Kingborough and Launceston City, and 7 for all other councils.

Elections will be held for 1 mayor, 1 deputy mayor (lord mayor and deputy lord mayor for Hobart City Council) and the relevant number of councillors in each municipal area.
