Local government elections 2026
Nominations for the 2026 local government elections opened at 9 am on Monday 7 September and closed at 12 noon on Monday 21 September 2026.
This page contains information about candidate eligibility, nomination requirements and the council-specific lodgement details used during the nomination period.
Further nominations were called for remaining councillor vacancies on King Island and Tasman councils, closing at 12 noon on Monday 28 September 2026.
Nominations for the 2026 local government elections are now closed.
To stand as a councillor in a local government area, candidates had to be enrolled in that area and have their principal place of residence in Tasmania. Candidates could nominate as a councillor in one local government area only. Eligible councillor candidates could also nominate for mayor or deputy mayor in the same local government area.

During the nomination period, completed nomination forms could be lodged by email, with the returning officer or the appointed electoral officer for the relevant council.

Following recent amendments to the Local Government Act 1993, the number of councillors to be elected has changed for 2026. The table below reflects the new arrangements: 9 councillors for Clarence City, Glenorchy City, Hobart City, Kingborough and Launceston City, and 7 for all other councils.
Elections will be held for 1 mayor, 1 deputy mayor (lord mayor and deputy lord mayor for Hobart City Council) and the relevant number of councillors in each municipal area.
Candidates standing in the 2026 local government elections had the opportunity to submit a candidate statement and photograph for publication in election information provided to voters.
Candidate statements and photographs were optional and separate from the nomination form.
