Electoral expenditure

It’s important for electoral participants to understand the meaning of electoral expenditure for Tasmanian parliamentary elections, because:

• electoral expenditure must be disclosed to the Tasmanian Electoral Commission after an election campaign period
• electoral expenditure incurred must be paid from a campaign account for House of Assembly elections, and may be paid from a campaign account for Legislative Council elections
• electoral expenditure is capped for Legislative Council members and candidates
• public funding is available for eligible electoral expenditure in House of Assembly elections via the Election Campaign Fund.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission’s resources for House of Assembly electoral expenditure and Legislative Council election expenditure include definitions for each election type, examples of what is and is not included, and when expenditure is incurred for disclosure purposes.
