Local government elections are underway across Tasmania

Local government elections for all 29 councils are being held across Tasmania this October.

This is your opportunity to help choose the councillors, mayor and deputy mayor who will represent your local community for the next four years and make decisions about local services and places that are part of everyday community life.

Voting in Tasmania’s local government elections is compulsory for enrolled electors and, unlike state and federal elections, voting is by post. There are no polling places or election-day queues.

Keep an eye on your letterbox.

Postal ballot packs are being delivered to all enrolled voters. They contain your ballot papers, instructions and everything you need to return your vote. When your pack arrives, complete your ballot papers and return your vote as soon as you can.

Voting closes at 2 pm on Tuesday 27 October 2026. Your completed vote must reach the Tasmanian Electoral Commission by this time, so allow enough time for delivery. If it is too late to return your vote by post, you can take it to your local council offices. Visit tec.tas.gov.au/locations to find the address.
